BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.
NEW EARTH OBSERVATION SATELLITE
China on Friday sent a new Earth observation satellite into space from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The satellite, Gaofen-13 02, was launched at 16:33 p.m. (Beijing Time) by a Long March-3B carrier rocket, and entered its planned orbit successfully.
The satellite will be mainly used in land surveys, crop yield estimation, environmental governance, meteorological early warning and forecasting, as well as comprehensive disaster prevention and mitigation.
TOP SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES
China's Ministry of Science and Technology Friday released the top 10 domestic scientific advances of 2022.
At the top of the list is the Martian subsurface structure revealed by Mars rover Zhurong's radar instrument. The study not only showed detailed subsurface features of Mars but also provided the observation evidence of the water presence, which helps to shed light on the planet's geologic history and climate conditions.
The detection of active, repeating, fast radio bursts by the FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope) ranked second.
The third place went to a new principle and technology for hydrogen generation directly from seawater. It solves a technical problem that has long plagued the industry.
TOP PALEONTOLOGICAL ADVANCES
The Palaeontological Society of China (PSC) on Friday announced the country's top 10 paleontological advances of 2022.
The selected breakthroughs include the Silurian fossils revealing the rise and diversity of early jawed vertebrates, the ancient genomes revealing Xinjiang population history over the past 5,000 years, and the evolution of key ecology behaviors of Mesozoic insects, according to the list released by the PSC.
Other advances on the list involve the sexual selection that promotes head-neck specific evolution in giraffes, changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide content revealing the mechanism of the end-Permian mass extinction, and the world's first mapping of tiger ancient genomes.
