BEIJING, March 15 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.
TERAHERTZ DETECTION
China's self-developed terahertz detection equipment has successfully carried out operations in Antarctica and harvested results by completing astronomical observation experiments at terahertz frequencies.
The detection equipment includes core devices such as a superconducting terahertz receiver, a low-temperature refrigerating machine and small high-precision antennas, said the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
A joint research team from the PMO and the Polar Research Institute of China conducted the experiments at China's Kunlun and Taishan stations in Antarctica during the country's 39th Antarctic expedition that set off in October 2022.
SEAWATER DESALINATION
Chinese researchers have developed a type of modified porous membrane which could be a viable option for seawater desalination and oily wastewater purification, according to the Guangdong Academy of Sciences (GDAS).
The study team developed this new type of high-performance, low-cost, and scalable modified membrane with superior oil resistance, said He Bin, researcher with the Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences under the GDAS and leader of the study.
The utilization of solar steam generation via photothermal conversion is a sustainable and highly efficient solution for addressing long-standing water scarcity.
LINEAR ACCELERATOR
The linear accelerator of China's high-energy synchrotron radiation light source successfully accelerated its first electron beam on Tuesday, its builder has announced.
The light source, the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), is a major science infrastructure project in China built by the Institute of High Energy Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
HEPS is like a supersized X-ray machine, with the ability to accelerate electrons to near the speed of light through three stages and generate synchrotron radiation, which features strong penetrability and a high level of brightness, thus helping researchers observe microcosms.
